DIY Autumn Pumpkin Craft

Autumn is definitely one of my favorite seasons. Crafting makes me happy :) I want to share with you how to DIY this Autumn Pumpkin decoration. It is really fun to make. I will give you all of the step-by-steps. Check out my Facebook page @greyhousecreations for a live video tutorial.

Autumn Pumpkin Supplies

  • cardboard (pull from recycling bin)

  • felt 1-2 colors (I used bright orange and cream color)

  • burlap

  • jute twine

  • raffia

  • marker

  • craft glue

  • hot glue gun/glue

  • scissors

Instructions to make this DIY Autumn Pumpkin

1. MAKE THE PUMPKIN. Hand draw a pumpkin shape with stem. Or find one online and print it

out. If printing it, remember to scale to size. My pumpkin is about 5.25" wide by 4.5" tall. Cut out pumpkin shape from your printed paper. Use it as a stencil. Cut out pumpkin from cardboard.

2. Use a pen or marker to trace pumpkin onto orange felt material.

3. CUT PUMPKIN 1st LAYER OF COLOR. Cut out traced pumpkin from felt. You do not need the stem, so just cut it off.

4. Use craft glue to glue felt onto pumpkin. Only need small amount of glue around the edges.

5. ADD BURLAP. Cut burlap to cover the front of your pumpkin.

Flip over the burlap and pumpkin so that the cardboard back is exposed.

6. GLUE BURLAP. Put hot glue on one edge and fold burlap over. Careful: glue is very hot! Please supervise your kiddos. Then do the other side. Keep burlap slightly taunt. Cut out a notch where the stem is. Add a dot of glue to attach the burlap to the front of the pumpkin - right under the stem. Keep gluing and pulling slightly to keep taunt and adhere the burlap to the back. Cut the excess burlap off along the way.

7.COVER THE BACK. Get your second piece of felt for the back. I chose this cream color. Trace the pumpkin on the felt. Be careful not to get marker on the burlap. You do not need the stem for this part. When you cut out this piece, notice I cut it about 1/4" smaller around the whole thing. This way it doesn't stick out from the front. Cut a piece of jute twine to be the hanger. (This is optional). Then glue the felt onto the back to cover the messy burlap and cardboard.

8. COVER PUMPKIN STEM. Now flip the pumpkin to show the front (orange/burlap side). Let's finish the stem by wrapping it with jute twine. Add a dot of hot glue at the base on

front and back. Start wrapping the jute twine tightly, working from bottom to top. Don't forget to do the very top of the stem and cover it with twine. Continue to wrap jute twine back down towards pumpkin to complete the 2nd layer. Use dots of glue to secure twine along the way. Finish off in the back with a dot of glue. Cut off excess twine. Glue the hanger twine you made to the back of the stem.

9. MAKE BOW. Take a long piece of raffia. Wrap it gently around 4 of your fingers. Pinch all pieces in the middle. Tie raffia or jute twine around middle to keep it in place. Now let's make the tails of the bow. Again, wrap a long strand of raffia around 4 of your fingers. When you take it off your hand it makes a "circle" - pinch one side and then cut through the opposite side with scissors. You are left holding the middle. Place on top of your bow and secure with twine. Glue a small piece of wider raffia to cover the middle. Glue in the back and cut excess off. Bow is done.

10. MAKE LEAF. You can cut the leaf out free hand or print out a leaf from online. Make sure to scale to proper size prior to printing. Cut out leaf and use as a template to trace leaf onto felt. Cut out leaf from felt. I used an olive green color.

11. Let's put it all together. Layout where you want the leaf and bow. Attach with hot glue. You made add more to your pumpkin to decorate as you wish.

How will you style your new Autumn Pumpkin?

I hope you enjoyed this DIY pumpkin craft. I really love the muted colors and all the textures of this craft. Please post and share when you make yours!!
